Choosing materials for your build
How to pick between materials for strength, weight, weather and cost.
Know the job
Load, weather, water, heat and wear decide the material more than looks do.
Weight versus strength
Aluminum is light and doesn't rust; steel is cheaper and stronger for its cost; wood is easy to work and repair.
Outdoors and water
Use rated outdoor and marine materials: treated lumber, stainless or galvanized fasteners, sealed electrics.
Cost over its life
A cheaper material that needs replacing sooner can cost more. Ask the draft to compare.
Ask for options
Ask your draft for "a cheaper version" or "a lighter version" to see how materials change the budget.
Concept drafts are for planning, budgeting and talking to professionals. They are not engineering or build plans. Have a qualified professional check any design before you build or use it.
